On Monday, January 15, Hillendale Elementary and Pocopson Elementary united together at Hillendale to participate in Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service, a day dedicated to volunteer service in honor of Dr. King's legacy. The two schools joined forces to learn, create, and donate their time and effort in support of seven local charities! About 400 people from both school communities participated in the three-hour event. The benefiting charities included BVSPCA (West Chester), KACS (Kennett Square), Nemours (Wilmington), Cradles to Crayons (Philadelphia), STEHM (Wilmington), Julee Cares (Greenville), and Pocopson Home (West Chester). Representatives of each organization were on site and volunteers had the opportunity to learn about how they make our communities better.
Volunteers created items such as OT busy boards for seniors, cat toys, inspirational signs for transitional housing, clothing kits for children, surgical caps for children, craft kits for pediatric patients, and sorted coat donations. Below are the estimated numbers for some of the donated items:
- 500 surgical caps for Julee Cares
- 8 DART bus cards for STEHM Martha House (from funds raised)
- 18 inspirational decor signs for STEHM Martha House
- 30 underwear-ness kits for Cradles to Crayons
- 150 craft kits for Nemours
- 170 coats for Cradles to Crayons
- 120 Cat toys
- 18 busy boards for Pocopson Home
- 80lbs of food collected for KACS
Donated items also included used blankets and towels for shelter animals, canned food and non-perishable items for local food cupboards, and personal hygiene and cleaning products for transitional housing.
Fletchers, a local food truck graciously came out to offer some treats in support of the event. A portion of the purchases from Fletcher’s was donated to STEHM for program participants' transportation to work and school.
Thank you to our HES and PES PTOs for planning a successful day of service! We are so proud of our families, staff, and community members who spent the day fulfilling a mission, helping those in need, and making an impact on the community and in the lives of others!
