Charles F. Patton Middle School Student Advances to State Finals in Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Essay Contest

Shriya Hallur, an 8th Grader at Charles F. Patton Middle School (CFPMS), has been named winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen post and district competitions. After receiving a $300 award for her local success, she now advances to states for her chance at winning a $500 scholarship and a shot at the national title.

Each year, the contest challenges thousands of middle school students to examine American history and their own experiences in American society through a short essay on a theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. This year’s prompt asked “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

In her essay, Hallur reflected on her patriotism for our nation and for the principles that define it. “I enjoy serving others in need,” she wrote. “I like helping my country become a beautiful and better place.” Hallur volunteers at the American Red Cross, LaMancha Animal Rescue and Project C.U.R.E.

8th Graders Gautam Mannem and Selina Zhao placed second and third in VFW Post 5467’s competition and also received cash prizes.

“To succeed in this type of competition, students must demonstrate ‘disciplinary literacy’—the ability to write like a scientist, a historian, or an artist,” reflected CFPMS Social Studies Chair Shannon Freehart. “Patton prepares students by breaking down the silos between departments. Instead of writing being ‘something you do in English Language Arts,’ it is integrated into the daily fabric of most classes.”

CFPMS Principal Nick Allen expressed pride in the students’ civic engagements. “I have no doubt this is just the beginning of their many contributions to society and success in life,” he said.
