Sleep Hygiene is Important - Advice from Dr. Judith Owens*

This 5 minute video provides valuable information about the importance of sleep and what we can do to help students get more of it.  The presenter is Dr Judith Owens MD, MPH  Associate in Neurology; Director, Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders and member of the Faculty of Neurology, Harvard Medical School.  It was filmed during her 2016 talk at Patton Middle School.


  • Maintain a consistent sleep-wake cycle (i.e. bedtime and wake time weekdays and weekends)
  • Establish a regular and consistent bedtime routine
  • Keep a regular schedule of daily activities, including meals
  • Avoid bright light in the bedroom at bedtimes and during the night
  • Limit activities which promote wakefulness while in bed (texting, doing homework)
  • Eliminate caffeine after 6:00 PM
  • Avoid heavy meals and rigorous exercise close to bedtime
  • Keep electronics out of the bedroom
  • Include activities in the bedtime that are relaxing and calming
